Introduced in 1972 as a compact hatchback, the Honda Civic has increased in size and features over time, while continuing to offer excellent fuel economy. As Honda Siel president chief executive, Masahiro Takedagawa, has commented, “The new Honda Civic carries forward the legacy of the Civic, which is already the most refined and advanced car in the segment."

All 2009 Honda Civic models come with a sporty three-spoke steering wheel, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink on navigation-equipped models, and a USB audio interface on Civic EX, EX-L and Si models. On the exterior is a new bumper and grille, headlight and taillight, while upper-level models feature new alloy wheel designs as well.

Offered in sedan and coupe versions, the eighth generation Honda Civic continues to hold its position as the top highly competitive car in a compact class, thanks to its innovative styling, interior refinement and trusted Honda performance. At its full potential, the Honda Civic 2009 delivers inexpensive performance in a spacious, practical sedan-style body (or less spacious in the coupe), combined with a user-friendly and unique interior.

The Honda Civic hatchback (basic model) comes with a 104 KW of power, 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine with a standard five-speed manual transmission. A five-speed automatic gearbox is optional. Two new engine types, the 1.8-litre i-VTEC VXi and 2.2-litre i-CTDi were added in 2009.

The Honda Civic sedans are performance models, powered by a 147 KW, 1.8-litre four-cylinder i-VTEC engine. They come with a five-speed manual transmission gearbox. Other features include a limited-slip differential, sport suspension, Vehicle Stability Assist with traction control, and P215/45VR17 tyres on 17-inch alloy wheels. Fog lights are included as a standard feature. On the interior are synthetic suede sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an aluminum shift knob. Also installed in sedan is a 350-watt, seven-speaker stereo.

The Honda Civic Type R, Winner of the 2008 Australian International Design Award, Wheels Automotive Design Awards, 2008 Design of the Year and 2008 Interior Design of the Year, is now available in Honda’s traditional racing colour: Championship White. The Honda Civic Type R now comes with a limited slip differential - helping it handle its 148 kilowatts around corners more effectively. In 2009, it gains parking sensors on the outside, and on the inside, an auxiliary jack and USB port.

Behind the wheel, a new Honda Civic has a split-level dashboard, which places the digital speedometer and fuel and temperature gauges above the steering wheel’s rim, just below the driver’s eye-line. The Honda Civic’s smooth, vinyl interior and roomy back seat ensure a balance of luxury and comfort for every passenger. With no factory options, the model you choose determines the features of your car, although all Civics come with six airbags, antilock brakes and a body structure designed to withstand impacts from bigger and heavier vehicles.

A new Honda Civic’s low engine note and stability on the road offers the quality customers have come to expect from Honda, with quick response times and features that are simple testaments to its popularity. The five-speed automatic transmission in basic models makes for simple driving pleasure, with agility and versatility on the road that may surprise you. Built in Japan, Canada and now in Indiana in the USA, the Honda Civic 2009 is made for reliability, while its low consumption keeps your pocket in mind.

Honda puts “safety for all” at the forefront of modern vehicle design, particularly in terms of advanced safety features. Side airbags are standard on all i-CTDi and VXi models as well as curtain airbags (bags that fill with warm hybrid gas, allowing the bag to stay inflated for several seconds during rollover crashes). Upper-level models feature six airbags as standard.

Major safety enhancements include:
  • Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) on all models, which is computerised technology that improves the safety of the Honda Civic by detecting and minimising skids.
  • VSA also monitors wheel speed, steering angle and lateral G-force. It can detect over-steering, under-steering or traction loss, brake individual wheels and reduce engine speed to help you maintain constant control over your new Honda Civic.
  • Traction control also minimises wheel spin during acceleration on wet or slippery road surfaces, or when grip differs from one set of wheels to the other.
  • Every Honda Civic has front airbags for both the driver and passenger. Optimal airbag deployment matches the speed and severity of a crash, helping to cut down on the injuries that are sometimes caused by airbags in the event of an accident.
