The Honda Civic has been on the market for nearly 40 years and is still popular owing in part to its unusual appearance, stability on the road and excellent performance in an increasingly cash-strapped and green world. With a reputation for good value, a used Honda Civic is a popular choice in the pre-owned buyers’ market.

Buying used cars can also be buying green: late model cars in the Honda Civic range can average more than 13 kilometres per litre. And with a used car, drivers can lower their ownership expenses on items such as collision insurance and taxes. Combine lower fuel usage with lower consumption and the result is lower emissions.

The current model belongs to the eighth generation Honda Civic, which was re-introduced for the 2006 model car. With a much more contemporary design - evident in its futuristic triangular fog lights and exhausts – a used Honda Civic offers race appeal to owners of small cars. All current body styles and trim combinations were available from 2006 onward, with the exception of the Si sedan, which was available in 2007. Prior to the current Honda Civic was the seventh-generation Honda Civic, which was sold between 2001 and 2005.

Available previously were the coupe and sedan styles, as well as sporty two door hatchbacks (Si models) in the 2006 Honda Civic model. Most cars have a 1.7-litre engine that reaches powers of 103 KW in the EX models. Popular features include collapsing rear seats, chilled glove compartments, light steering wheels, one-touch driver’s function and bright sunroofs.

Check your used Honda Civic’s service history

When buying a used Honda Civic, it’s always worth checking the car’s service history, as this reads like a map to its engine’s history. Because of Honda Civic’s reputation for reliability, cars that have been misused and poorly maintained often still sell for good prices. It’s also crucial to check the car’s features, as the entry level and top of the range Civics vary. You should name your price according to the year and specification level rather than relying on set price lists. In the used Honda Civic market, a number of problems and solutions have emerged:
  • Spare parts can be pricey, but in recent times Honda has made an effort to make parts easily available to clients. Find your convenient local Honda dealer today

  • Early Civics tended to burn oil, and although this wasn’t a problem in later models, it may be worth opening the bonnet and inspecting the fluid levels before you test drive the car.

  • Oil leaking from the valve cover gasket can contaminate the timing belt and shorten a Honda Civic’s life. The cambelt is scheduled to be replaced every 80 000 km, and if it breaks, the internal damage is serious.

  • Honda Civics are front wheel drive cars and tyre wear can impact performance. Take care to rotate the tyres at each service.

  • It may be worthwhile to check that the drive shaft boots and the constant velocity (CV) joints don’t make a clicking noise when turning on full lock.

The Honda Civic’s V-TEC engine

Honda has long been known for its quality vehicle technology, with its V-TEC petrol engines and i-CTDi diesels having earned a favourable reputation among top performing four-cylinder units on pre-owned car markets. Although Honda doesn’t offer the variety of choice that other car manufacturers do, well-cared for used models are never hard to come by. Buyers looking for a used Honda Civic might find the prices slightly higher than their mainstream alternatives, but generally this is attributed to either Honda’s durability or to Honda not cutting on engine-part quality. This equates with reliability on the road.

Honda V-TEC petrol engines are characterised by their high-revving performance, and represent some of the world’s finest petrol engine technology. When taking the V-TEC to its maximum output, drivers are rewarded by a satisfying, high-pitched growl, but the real reward in the V-TEC engine is to be found when drivers don’t feel like testing the limits, and the engine remains relatively subdued and economical.

The Honda Civic’s safety features

The Honda Civic ranks high in safety for front and side impacts with SRS (supplemental restraint system) airbags for both the driver and his or her passengers. It also has antilock brake systems (ABS), vehicle stability assist and emergency brake assist. On the windscreen, drivers will enjoy rain-sensitive windscreen wipers, and on the sides of thecar are folding door-mirrors. There is no rear wiper, rather, the upper window’s curvature is designed to shed water and the lower portion is coated with water repellent.

Interior features include remote locking, height-adjustable driver’s seat, front seatbelts with remote release, tilt and reach-adjustable steering and on-wheel audio controls.
