After a test drive, reviewers often comment on Honda cars’ reliability and durability. Honda cars last for many years and often don’t require much more than their standard services and check-ups in order to run effectively. While it’s relatively new to Honda’s range of vehicles, the Honda Jazz is no exception.
A used Honda Jazz is an ideal purchase for someone who is starting out his or her life and doesn’t have responsibilities such as a family. Buying a new car can be an expensive endeavour and insuring it can also be costly. Moreover, once you drive your new car off the showroom floor, its value decreases significantly. For this reason, students and young professionals will appreciate the Honda Jazz’s affordability and fuel efficiency.
If you opt for a used Honda Jazz, you will benefit from its reduced price and, since the first generation was released in 2003 in South Africa, there have been a number of upgraded features in recently manufactured Hondas, such as radio and air-conditioner controls mounted on the steering wheel.
While it’s the smallest vehicle in Honda’s range, the Honda Jazz is big on innovation. Honda has never been one to sit on its laurels and Honda engineers are constantly striving to raise the general standard of vehicles manufactured. Three of the most prominent innovations found in the Jazz are its “magic seats”, i-DSI engine and relocated fuel tank.
• “Magic seats”
In order to make the most of the cabin space in the 2003 Honda Jazz, Honda’s designers developed a new seating configuration and mechanism known as “magic seats”. The rear seats can easily be folded completely flat to increase the car’s available storage space and allow for long items such as surf boards and bicycles. However, they can also be folded into a vertical position to accommodate tall objects that cannot be laid flat such as house plants. Moreover, there is an additional storage space located underneath the “magic seats”. This popular feature has been retained through all updated models, including the 2005 Honda Jazz and 2006 Honda Jazz.
• i-DSI engine
Used Honda Jazz cars are available in models with two different engines; the most innovative engine option being the i-DSI. The four-cylinder engine uses two spark plugs for each cylinder; each firing alternately to optimise fuel consumption. This increases the power generated by the engine while reducing the amount of fuel needed to move the vehicle.
• Relocated fuel tank
Another design element that helps to maximise the limited space of the relatively small Honda Jazz is its fuel tank’s location. In most other vehicles, the fuel tank is located beneath the rear passenger seats. However, the Honda engineers decided to relocate it to under the front seats. This change allows for the versatility of the “magic seats”. They are able to be folded into the floor without taking up space.
Debuting in 2001 in Japan, the Honda Jazz has been through only one radical redesign, in 2008. Marketed as “the enemy of average”, the Honda Jazz has impressed the public, vehicle fanatics and other car manufacturers since it was first unveiled. In fact, a few years after its release, other car manufacturers developed their own subcompact models intended to compete with the Honda Jazz.
When deciding which used Honda Jazz is best for you, it is advisable that you pay attention to the differences between the available trim levels. The Honda Jazz is available in the base trim level and a luxurious sport trim level, which has additional features.
When first released, the Honda Jazz was only available in the base trim level. As its name suggests, the base trim level Honda Jazz is the basic model. However, it’s still equipped with a wide range of impressive features, including all three of the above-mentioned innovations.
The base trim level includes fabric upholstery, air-conditioning, electronic locking mechanism, a rear window wiper and body coloured side mirrors. It’s sleek angular design is aesthetically appealing.
Under the bonnet, you can choose between a 1.4-litre four-cylinder i-DSL engine and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder VTEC engine, which switches between two camshaft profiles to compensate for differing road and driving conditions.
The base trim level includes several safety features, including front and side curtain airbags and three-point seatbelts.
The Sport trim level is an upgrade from the base trim level and is the slightly costlier option. The exterior is given a sportier appearance with spoilers in the front and rear of the car. It is also equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels and larger tyres to match. Another new feature is keyless entry, which gives the vehicle added security.
The Sport is also available with either the i-DSL or VTEC engines.
