How to Jump-Start a Vehicle: A Step-by-Step Guide

April 17, 2025 By Rokkit Digital

Got a flat battery? CMH Honda The Glen is here to help! Whether you’re dealing with a car that won’t start or you’re preparing for emergencies, follow this simple guide to safely jump-start your vehicle.

What You’ll Need:

  • A set of jumper cables
  • A working vehicle with a fully charged battery
  • Safety gloves and glasses (recommended)

Step 1: Position the Vehicles

  1. Park the working vehicle close to the dead vehicle—just close enough for the jumper cables to reach, but make sure the vehicles don’t touch.
  2. Turn off both vehicles and engage the parking brakes for safety.

Step 2: Connect the Jumper Cables

  1. Identify the positive (+) and negative (−) battery terminals on both vehicles.
  2. Attach the red (positive) clamp to the dead battery’s positive terminal.
  3. Connect the other red (positive) clamp to the working battery’s positive terminal.
  4. Attach the black (negative) clamp to the working battery’s negative terminal.
  5. Secure the remaining black (negative) clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the dead vehicle’s engine block—away from the battery—to avoid sparks.

Step 3: Start the Working Vehicle

  1. Start the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes to charge the dead battery.
  2. Try starting the dead vehicle. If it doesn’t start right away, wait another 5 minutes and try again.

Step 4: Remove the Jumper Cables

Once the dead vehicle starts, carefully remove the jumper cables in reverse order:

  • Remove the black clamp from the grounded metal surface on the dead vehicle.
  • Remove the black clamp from the working battery.
  • Remove the red clamp from the working battery.
  • Finally, remove the red clamp from the previously dead battery.

Step 5: Keep the Engine Running

  • Let the jump-started vehicle run for 15–20 minutes to allow the battery to recharge.
  • It’s best to drive the vehicle to help the alternator charge the battery fully.

Additional Tips:

  • If the car doesn’t start after multiple attempts, the battery may need replacing.
  • Never attempt to jump-start a leaking or visibly damaged battery.
  • Consider keeping a portable jump starter in your car for future emergencies.

By following these steps, you can safely get your car back on the road and avoid being stranded with a dead battery. CMH Honda The Glen is your trusted partner for vehicle maintenance, emergency assistance, and expert advice.
