Fuel prices in South Africa keep climbing, and every rand saved at the pump makes a difference. Your Honda FIT is already built with efficiency in mind, but a few small habits can stretch each tank even further. Here’s what the team at CMH Honda Pinetown recommends.
Driving Habits
Smooth acceleration is the single biggest win. Rather than flooring it at every green light, ease into the throttle. You’ll get to where you’re going, just with a lot less fuel burned along the way.
Read the road ahead too. When you spot a red light or traffic slowing down, lift off the accelerator early and let the car coast. The engine slows you naturally, which uses far less fuel than slamming on the brakes at the last second.
On the highway, holding a steady cruise speed matters. Once you push past 100 km/h, consumption climbs quickly. On longer journeys, the Honda FIT’s adaptive cruise control found on the steering, will do the work for you, holding speed and keeping a safe distance from the car in front, so you can focus on the road instead of the pedals.
Use ECON mode
ECON mode is one of the most under used features in the Honda FIT, and it can save you serious money over time. Press the green ECON button next to your gear selector and three things happen.
Throttle response softens first, so the car meters your inputs more gently and cuts out wasted fuel from jumpy acceleration. The aircon eases off next, cycling less often with the fan running slower. You still get cool air, just not at maximum blast, so switch ECON off on a scorching Durban days when you need the aircon at its most powerful.
The third change happens in the gearbox. The CVT holds lower ratios for longer, keeping the engine in its efficient range instead of climbing into thirsty high revs.
Look after your FIT
A well maintained car is an efficient car, and it’s something the team at CMH Honda Pinetown sees every day. Dirty air filters, worn spark plugs, the wrong oil grade, or low tyre pressures will all quietly cost you fuel every time you drive. Sticking to your service intervals is the easiest fix.
The technicians at CMH Honda Pinetown know these cars inside and out, and a proper service keeps your FIT running the way Honda intended.
